MyTalk is one of 20 promising startups included in the MobileBeat 2010 Startup Competition, and is in the running for one of two coveted Tesla Awards. At first glance MyTalk may just look like another location-based social mobile network. Though a deeper dive shows that this application may offer a bit more than location-based check-in points and knowing where your friends are eating on a Friday night. MyTalk defines itself as a location-based network that allows users to search for other members based on proximity and similar interests, none of which is anything new. Though the company also notes that a user may be able to find a business based on proximity and needs. For example, if I needed a tow truck service, I could use MyTalk to see if one is in my general area. While Google may be able to tell you tow truck companies in your area, MyTalk could tell you if an actual driver is a block away.
Plenty of competition exists for MyTalk, including location-based mobile networks Foursquare, Gowalla and Loopt. Virtual personal assistant application Siri may also be considered competition, as it helps users find restaurants, get taxis or call a tow truck based on their locations.
The company plans on generating revenue through location-based advertising, and mentioned that it is currently working with Priceline.com to incorporate nearby hotel deals.
The Reston, Va.-based company, founded in 2009, is available online and through an iPhone application with future plans to develop iPad, Android and Blackberry applications.
San Francisco – June 30, 2010 – Today Mytalk, Inc., a location based social networking company, was announced as one of the 20 finalists in the MobileBeat 2010 Startup Competition.
